I was too young to actually remember this event happening, being only three years old, but I still hear about it from my family and friends.
From the Wikipedia article...
The PEPCON disaster was an industrial disaster that occurred in Henderson,
Nevada on May 4, 1988 at the Pacific Engineering Production Company of Nevada
(PEPCON) plant. The chemical fire and subsequent explosions claimed two lives,
injured 372 people, and caused an estimated US$100 million of damage. A large
portion of the Las Vegas metropolitan area—10 miles (16 km) away—was affected
and several agencies activated disaster plans.
PEPCON was located in what is now the area near American Pacific and Gibson Rd. My family and I were living in the Pittman area at the time and the aftershock hit us and did some damage to the house we were at. My brother, who was in school at Edna F. Hinman Elementary at the time, remembers being told to get under the desk, in fear of the ceiling tiles falling down.
There's even a Facebook group for it, found here. Any other PEPCON survivors here?

I remember it. My mom had told me to go take a nap but of course, like any child, I didn't want to. I went to lie in my bed and that's when I saw a little bug on it. I was DEATHLY afraid of bugs when I was a child, still am a little bit. That's when I ran to find my mom and have her kill it. When I ran away my window shattered all over my bed, thank goodness that little bug was there! Our house had a bit more damage too. Crazy stuff!
